Diagnostic Testing and
Neuropsychological Assessments
Neuropsychological Assessments
A neuropsychological assessment generally consists of a clinical interview followed by administration of several measures (tests) that help us determine how your brain functions.
We offer comprehensive individualized testing for ADHD, Autism, memory/attention/learning difficulties, general cognition and learning styles.
What is neuropsychology?
Neuropsychology is the study
of brain-behavior relationships.
During a neuropsychological evaluation, we collect information about your memory, attention, processing speed, language, motor speed, and executive functioning (multi-tasking, judgment, organization, etc.). We use that data to determine whether you have something like Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), problems with memory, mild cognitive difficulties, or to help you better understand your strengths. Your performance provides us both with insight into your brain function.
How can a Neuropsychological Assessment help you?
This type of assessment is usually very helpful when you are trying to understand why you may be struggling with aspects of your day-to-day functioning. For example, maybe you are finding it hard to stay focused on your work and are afraid you are falling behind. We can complete an assessment to determine what may be causing those problems, then we can focus on addressing them.
Who is this type of diagnostic testing for?
These assessments are for anyone who may be:
Curious about their strengths
Concerned that they are having to work harder than others to get the same amount of work done
Noticing a significant change in their thinking
Interested in understanding their learning style better.
What you can expect in our appointment:
Appointments typically last 3 -4 hours, and are available virtually and in person. Most importantly, we recognize that when clients come in for an assessment, they may be nervous about the process. We take a gentle and compassionate approach and structure appointments to provide a safe and supportive environment for you.
We’ll start with a clinical interview that lasts approximately 1 hour.
During this interview, we’ll be asking about your symptoms, when they started, how they are impacting you day-to-day, and we’ll ask about other things that might also impact your brain function (sleep, mood, substance use, etc.).
We’ll then complete 2-3 hours of testing aimed at measuring brain function.
We’ll target areas such as intelligence (IQ), attention, memory, processing speed, language, and executive functioning (judgment, multi-tasking, etc.). Once testing is completed, we will discuss initial impressions and will set up a feedback meeting to review.
During our feedback meeting, we’ll discuss performance and create a strategy for optimization.
The feedback meeting lasts about an hour, and will include in-depth information about how you performed on the tests. We’ll discuss strengths and areas of growth, provide diagnostic information (if warranted) and will go over my recommendations. If you meet criteria for ADHD or another diagnosis, we will also discuss treatment options.
